Foreign countries generally attach importance to the production of insulation materials and their application in buildings, striving to substantially reduce energy consumption and thereby reduce environmental pollution and the greenhouse effect. The foreign PU insulation-materials industry has a long history, and insulation materials for building energy conservation account for the great majority. Most existing buildings in China are high-energy-consumption buildings, with energy consumption per unit area 2–5 times higher than that of developed countries with similar climatic conditions. Building insulation has enormous energy-saving potential and is an effective way to reduce China’s energy consumption. To this end, China issued related policies in 2004 and in 2007 began to require that new buildings in municipalities and provincial capitals be mandatorily provided with building insulation. Apart from economically more developed cities such as municipalities and provincial capitals, where the state has begun to require mandatorily that residential and public buildings be energy-saving and insulated, most prefecture-level and lower cities nationwide still have no explicit requirements. As environmental requirements become increasingly strict and energy costs rise substantially, rigid PU foam products, as a class of outstanding insulation materials on the current thermal-insulation and energy-saving market, are being applied more and more widely in building energy-saving insulation. At present, PU insulation materials used on walls abroad already account for 75%, whereas application in China is only 10%; PU therefore has enormous prospects in China. External-wall insulation of buildings is an industry that has only begun to become widespread in recent years.
