(1) The electrode shall match the parent-metal material.
(2) The flux coating shall be dry, uniform, and firm, without significant cracks or peeling.
(3) During welding, slag shall cover the molten metal uniformly and be easy to remove after cooling.
(4) Electrodes shall ignite and strike an arc easily, burn and melt uniformly, without spatter of metal or slag.

(5) When welding low-carbon steel pipe, titania-calcium (acidic) electrodes should be selected; when welding manganese-steel and similar pipes, low-hydrogen (basic) electrodes should be selected.
(6) Electrodes shall not be damp; the deposited metal shall be free of porosity, slag inclusions, and cracks.
(7) Electrode diameter shall be selected according to the pipe diameter and wall thickness of the weldment, or the thickness of plate or section steel.
